Partners for Rural Improvement and Development in Ethiopia (PRIDE) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving educational opportunities in under-served, rural communities in the mountainous regions of Ethiopia.
EDUCATION
WATER : SANITATION : SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT
62 million Ethiopians lack access to safe water: water.org
443 million school days are missed globally each year by children suffering from waterborne illness: savetherain.org
PRIDE supports three project types that collectively facilitate educational opportunities and advancement:
improvement of the educational environment,
clean water, and
sanitation facilities.
When these three project types are successfully and sustainably implemented, educational opportunities flourish as witnessed through classroom attendance, educational performance, and student matriculation. PRIDE focuses its efforts on these three primary areas of increasing educational attainment because we understand them to be the most effective at breaking the cycle of poverty.
This year, we have completed two projects which have a significant, positive impact at the K-8th grade Embuaybad School. Over 900 children now have access to clean drinking water at school and finished concrete floors in their classrooms. These projects focused on students’ health and the school's learning environment demonstrate PRIDE’s ongoing commitment to improving access to education for Ethiopia's under-served youth.
NEW PARTNERS : GREATER IMPACT
In 2019, PRIDE partnered with ADHENO, the Integrated Rural Development Association in Ethiopia. PRIDE is excited to be working closely with an organization that has a proven record of success in our focus region with similar projects. As our boots on the ground, ADHENO will handle all bidding processes, in-country partner collaboration, and regulatory management, and will effectively steward donors' financial investments. We are enthusiastic about our connection with ADHENO and the progress we already see taking shape!
CURRENT PROJECTS
EMBUAYBAD CLEAN WATER
Completed installation of a four-spigot, water-filling station and a hand/clothes washing station for students, staff, and community.
AMBWASHA LATRINES
In December 2019, construction begins on two latrines: four stalls for teachers and six stalls for students. There are currently no sanitation facilities at the school, so this project is expected to create significant impact in student health.
CLASSROOM IMPROVEMENTS
Construction will begin in December 2019 on top-priority classroom environment projects in Ambwasha as well: installation of skylights to brighten the classrooms, finish existing dirt/dung floors with concrete, and build partitions between classrooms to foster learning without noise distraction.
ENGAGE WITH PRIDE
According to UNESCO, the adult literacy rate in Ethiopia is 39%. Help us change that!
Clean water, safer sanitation, and classroom environment projects improve the quality of education so students can thrive. Get involved with PRIDE Ethiopia to create lasting, positive change. Recent site assessments confirmed extensive needs in three regional schools. PRIDE and ADHENO are prepared to develop significant impact with your help!
2019-2020 WINTER TRIP
In mid-winter 2019 members of the PRIDE Board and supporters of our work are traveling to Ethiopia. These visits provide the opportunity to ensure financial support is being spent effectively on projects that create a lasting impact in our host communities, and the chance to introduce our work to new stakeholders.
The team will visit each of the current projects under construction in addition to past projects in order to continue assessing the value of our work in creating change in the lives of the students and communities we serve.
