Sanitation Projects

Basic sanitation is one of the most effective means of disease prevention we humans have at our disposal. Even a primitive latrine built properly can effectively minimize or eliminate life threatening diseases that stem from contact with human waste and contaminated bodily fluids. Not to mention enhancing and protecting a level of decency that comes from being able to use a private bathroom.

However not all parts of the world, including rural Ethiopia, have access to sanitation resources and facilities.  PRIDE has made it a priority to use available donor funds to construct latrines in all of the school villages where PRIDE operates.

BEFORE

If and when latrines are found to be present, they may be poorly constructed and may be unsafe from a structural standpoint as well as sanitary standpoint. This photo is a latrine that was found to be structurally unsafe and was not built to afford even a minimum level of privacy. PRIDE used donor funds to replace this latrine with an updated one you see pictured at right.

AFTER

A well-constructed latrine offers students and school staff the necessary cleanliness and privacy all persons should have in order to prevent illness and disease borne out of contact with bodily waste and bodily fluids. The photo here is a recently constructed six stall latrine located at a File Ganet school; one of PRIDE’s focal villages.
